BACKYARD RULES

Taken directly from the Backyard Ultra website.

We have added some bold text for additional clarification.  As an official Backyard race no exceptions can or will be made.  If you are one second late to the corral you are out of the event.  If you take anything from crew or give anything to crew during a lap you are out of the event.  No warnings, no exceptions.

1) Course

. Loop or out and back

. Must be 4 miles 880 feet in length

. Metric equivalent 6.7056 kilometers

2) Starting Corral

. Measured to fit entire starting field

. Corral stays the same size throughout the event

. Participants must be in the starting corral at the bell (gong in our case)

3) Starts

. Each loop starts precisely 1 hour after the last

. Warning must be given 3, 2, and 1 minute prior to start (we will blow a whistle 3 times, then 2 times, then 1 time)

. All competitors must start at the bell (no late starts)

4) Loops

. Except for restrooms, competitors may not leave the course until each loop is completed.

. No non-competitors on the course (including eliminated runners)

. No personal aid during a loop (common aid stations are allowed)

. Each loop must be completed within an hour to be counted… including the final lap.

. No artificial aids (including trekking poles)

. Slower runners must allow passes.

5) Timing

. Timing of the loops is optional (we will use timing chips purely to provide Live Tracking, individual lap split times will not be provided because they are meaningless for this type of race)

6) Winner/Results

. The winner is the last person to complete a loop

. All others are technically DNF (We are allowed to give mileage results on Ultrasignup.  You will be given the mileage you accumulate as a result.  You will not receive a DNF unless you fail to complete a single lap)

. Results of each runner in terms of distance covered are to be given.

. If no runner can complete one more loop than anyone else, there is no winner.

7) Cap – Race must be open ended.

CREW AREAS & AID STATIONS FOR THE LAST COWBOY

Outside we will have several pop-ups on each side of the start and finish line arch as well as additional uncovered, chained off areas.  These areas will serve as your outside crew areas.  Runners crew members are allowed to “set up” in these designated areas.  By “set up” we mean bring some chairs, a cooler, etc.  Crew cannot set up pop-ups in the parking lot and must park vehicles in designated parking spaces.  Runners are allowed to go to crew vehicles between laps if necessary.

Inside the Community Center tables and chairs will be set up for additional crew space and to get out of the weather between laps.

The outside crew area is the area that allows for the least amount of travel between laps as it is directly beside the corral.

Both areas are first-come first-serve.  No saving of spots.  There’s plenty of room for everyone.

Runners will be self/crew sustained.  The race will provide water and Proxima C Endurance Fuel.  Any food items runners would like should be brought by them or acquired by their crew between laps.  There is no grilling, cooking, open flames, or generators allowed in the designated crew area.  There will be a designated area in the parking lot for cooking.

The Last Cowboy Swag & Awards

SWAG

All participants will receive a high-quality tri-blend shirt, and a custom wooden plaque with their accumulated mileage burnt in on site.

The last male and female standing will receive custom acrylic awards.

Finally, the winner will receive a beautiful custom belt buckle. Additional small freebie items will likely be included as well.

Additional Stuff

Our #1 goal for this race is to create an amazing trail experience where people can come out and find a new personal best. And afterwards, hang out and cheer others on as they attempt to do the same. Whether you hope to get 4.2 miles or 100 miles we want you to come out and join the fun.

It IS possible for ANY official Backyard race (like this one) to qualify participants for the World Championships in TN by exceptional performances earning “at-large” bids. All it takes is two great performances (the winner and the assist)

If someone DOES earn a spot to the Backyard World Championships from our race from an awesome at-large performance, we will provide that individual with $500 in travel expenses for the Backyard World Championships. The money MUST be used for expenses related to the trip. We aren’t going to hand you $500 and then you not go. We will pay for flights, gas, hotels, etc. up to $500.

We will announce every time one of the 150 spots is filled, as well as who filled it, on our FB page – https://www.facebook.com/groups/626354229850236
