Eternal Damnation Backyard Ultra – A LAST MAN STANDING EVENT LIKE NO OTHER!

PRESENTED BY ULTRAVERSE SUPPLEMENTS

This is a true last-man-standing event, and it will go until there is only one runner left, no matter how long it takes. Unlike all other competition race formats, this one isn’t about speed. It’s about grit, determination, and pure will to finish another lap.

When you’ve had enough and don’t think you can finish another lap, you’re encouraged and welcome to stick around and cheer on other participants. Kick your feet up, have a beer (BYOB), and watch the festivities.

Big Backyard Ultra Format

Each lap will be 4.167 miles long, and you have 1 hour to complete each lap. It’s not just about the last person standing. It’s a great opportunity for you to test your limits, whether that’s 100 miles or one 4-mile loop.

Where It Happens

Eternal Damnation Backyard Ultra takes place at the Switchgrass bike trail at Wilson State Park. The first ¾ mile of the race is on pavement to allow runners to spread out before the start line. The rest of the course is on a single-track mountain bike trail.

Eternal Damnation Backyard Ultra Race Rules

Each runner is allowed a maximum of 2 crew members. Since this is mostly a self-sustained race, crew members are highly recommended. Absolutely no crew interaction is allowed outside the start/finish area. Please do not bring additional spectators to avoid overcrowding. 

There will not be any hot food prepared, as you and your crew will be responsible for food, first aid, etc. The start/finish is the only aid station for the course. You’re required to carry everything you will need for each lap. No pacers, trekking poles, and no dogs for the race.

Course

  • Loop or out and back
  • Must be 4 miles 880 feet in length
  • Metric equivalent of 6.7056 kilometers

Measured to Fit the Entire Starting Field

  • Starting corral stays the same size throughout the event
  • Participants must be in the starting corral at the bell

Loops

  • Except for restrooms, competitor may not leave the course until each of your laps is completed
  • No non-competitors on the course (including eliminated runners)
  • No personal aid during a loop (common aid stations are allowed)
  • Each road loop has to be completed within an hour… including the final lap
  • Slow runners must allow passes

Timing

  • Timing of loops is optional

Starts

  • Each loop starts precisely 1 hour after the last
  • Warning must be given 3, 2, and 1 minutes prior to the start
  • All competitors must start at the bell (no late starts)

Winner and Results

  • The winner is the last person to complete a loop
  • Although all others are technically a DNF, that won’t be reflected on your Ultrasignup account
  • Results of runner in terms of distance covered are to be given
  • If no runner can complete one more loop than anyone else, there is no winner

Capping the Race

  • Race must be open-ended.

Our #1 goal for Eternal Damnation Backyard Ultra is to create an amazing trail experience where people can come out and find a new personal best. Afterwards, hang out and cheer others on as they do the same. 

We will post runners’ finishing mileage in UltraSigup. We want anyone and everyone to come out and see how many miles they can run on this challenging and beautiful course! Welcome to the Eternal Damnation Backyard Ultra!

Additional Information

We will announce each time a spot is filled, as well as who filled it, on our Facebook page. In the event that someone does earn a spot to the Big Backyard World Championships and wants to channel their inner Harvey Lewis to win a world record, either from an awesome at-large performance, OR a future silver ticket win, we will provide that individual with $500 in travel expenses related to the trip. Each participant will have a 10×10 area close to the start/finish to set up a popup or whatever else their crew needs. Runners will have a separate location to park their vehicles. Proxima C Endurance Fuel, water, and coffee (at night) will be provided, but you will need to bring your own cup.
